[HUAWEI] The step count on my watch/band is inaccurate

  • The accelerometer is used to count steps. Sometimes, your watch/band may mistake bumps in the road or arm movements when cycling, driving, riding a car, or washing dishes as steps, causing the step count to increase.
  • Your watch/band may fail to record your steps in real time if you walk a few steps and suddenly stop, or your walking posture is not recognized. However, these steps will eventually be tallied in the total step count.
  • Step counting principles, hardware, software, and other configurations may vary between products and brands, causing the step counts from HUAWEI watches/bands to differ from those from products of other brands.

The step count on the watch/band differs from that in the Huawei Health app

Both the watch/band and the phone use the accelerometer to count steps. The sensor identifies steps based on movement and acceleration in different directions.

  • Since phones tend to be placed in pockets or bags, the sensor mainly detects the change of acceleration of gravity (vertically). However, the watch/band is usually worn on the wrist, and the sensor mainly detects arm movement, which is more accurate and scientific. These different detection modes may lead to different step counts.
  • The Huawei Health app intelligently merges the data recorded by the watch/band and phone that have been logged in to with your HUAWEI ID, whereas the watch/band displays only the step count it records.

The step count on the watch/band is inaccurate or the watch/band does not count steps

  1. Update your watch/band to its latest version.
  2. It takes 15 seconds for the step count algorithm to recognize your steps. Try walking about 20 steps and checking whether the step count displays as normal.
  3. Restart your watch/band and check whether the step count is accurate.
  4. Restore your watch/band to its factory settings, pair it with your phone, and see if the issue is resolved.

    • Back up important data before restoring your watch/band to its factory settings to prevent data loss.
    • If your watch/band is paired and connected with a HarmonyOS/Android phone, please refer to this.
    • If your watch/band is paired and connected with an iPhone, please refer to this.
  5. After the factory reset:
    • If your watch/band still counts your steps inaccurately, call the Huawei customer service hotline for further assistance.
    • If your watch/band still does not count your steps, bring your device and proof of purchase to a nearby Huawei Customer Service Center for assistance.
